Wait I’m lost. Are you saying that scientific/technological innovation is consumerist? Or what is it specifically about Bill Gates and Steve Jobs that makes the stuff they did bad? Feels like a lot of good has come out of their inventions and their money (Gates’ philanthropic efforts, Jobs’ investments in Pixar etc). Or is it simply that having money always corrupts regardless of what’s done with it? Not at all trying to start shit; just want to understand where you’re coming from on this.

What a great question! You make some very good points! You are right in that not everything in the Consumer Culture is bad, like the technology that Apple and Microsoft made for us and Gates’ philanthropy. All good things. But, Men need to realize that they don’t buy Manliness and acquiring more and more possessions does not measure their Manliness, like these Men have done. By the Consumer Culture yardstick of material wealth, these Men are extremely successful. But they truly were at the right place at the right time, very very smart Men who were able to take advantage of the situation they were in and the people around them to generate wealth and build very successful companies. These companies, to sell technology, offered advantages for consumers, such as Office from Microsoft, the iPhones that we all use, etc. Their success came directly from Consumer Culture marketing, with people who bought from them. The Martial Culture teaches us that we earn our Manliness, not buy it. Success is NOT measured by material wealth, but Warrior Worth is is measured by the ability and willingness to fight – by the amount of Manliness he possesses – his fight skills, his trained and conditioned body and his Moral Virtues such as Humility, Integrity, Selflessness, Self Control and always showing Respect for people, places and things. Men earn Manliness – they don’t buy it. True Manliness, true Worth, is not measured by the amount of possessions but by the attributes of Warrior Manliness. Thank you so much for your question!
