these are miraculously well preserved bronze statuettes of 2 athletes (I
believe wrestlers) after participating in the pythian games at delphi.
the one on the left is holding a scraper in his arm to scrape the dust
off of himself (it would get stuck on the athletes because before
competing, they would cover themselves in olive oil). so this takes
place after the match, and it’s thought that the one on the left won and
the one on the right is holding out his hand to signify that the other
one won. very respectful—so indicative of true warrior way!
