What are your thoughts?
Speaking as someone who trains and fights, in my humble view its really important to be able to defend yourself and those around you.
You never know when you will be called upon to do just that, possibly saving your own life and/or those around you.
To mock someone who can defend himself is pretty self revealing.

@warriormale I’d imagine it’s also important so seek the proper training from someone and how to identify it. There are far too many “Mc-Dojos” out there today where one can almost literally purchase their Black Belt and be considered a competent fighter. Which is, unfortunately, what I think this photo is more-so pointing out. A grown man still doing martial arts is great IF it’s being done right.
Any experience on how to identify places like this?
Belts dont really make sense to be begin with since they instill you with pride even when you should be losing it and gaining insight into your skills
Depends on the mentality. They ARE useful in giving a baseline idea of your skill level….but when they become the end-all-be-all? You have a problem.
A belt is a measure of competence, given by a trainer who has the authority and the track record to bestow it.
I train at Renzo Gracie in New York and I can tell you categorically that every belt and stripe given in BJJ is earned, deserved and bestowed by master black belts.
